London's main sewers were designed and constructed by Joseph Bazalgette in the 1860's. While they continue to work to this day, with the increase in population in London, more capacity is needed to prevent sewage overflow into the Thames. The solution is a new 25km tunnel from Acton Storm Tanks in the west to Beckton in the East. The route of the tunnel mainly follows the route of the Thames but there are construction sites in several locations that require either site access construction or other highways works.
The works are being carried out in three areas by three main contractors and Itertek have been engaged by all of these areas to obtain all required EToN permits on their behalf. This is typical of the work we carry out where the contractors are experts in their own field of tunnel construction but have limited knowledge of the process needed to gain highway authority approval for where their works impact the highway network. Of course, it would be possible to build a streetworks team specifically for the project but since it is due to be completed in 2023 there is little point in expending time and money when Itertek have the expertise to carry out this work on a project basis.
We’re building a ‘super sewer’ under the Thames to intercept those nasty spills and clean up our river for the good of the city, its wildlife and you. The Tunnel
